Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has explained the reason he dropped Luka Jovic and Borja Mayoral on the bench in the 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad in their La Liga opener.
the gaffer turned on Marvin Park and Sergio Arribas came on instead of the two strikers as he claimed he never wanted to change the striker.
I didn’t want to change the system, we had to put players on out wide – that’s what we did,” Zidane responded.
“I have a lot of players. Today, I have made this choice.
“I don’t have anything against Jovic or against any player, I just didn’t want to change the system and that’s why I changed the wingers.”
Zidane was left feeling frustrated as even these changes didn’t have the impact he was hoping for.
“They are two points lost because we always go for the win,” the coach insisted.
“In general, we had a good game; we didn’t give anything away in defence.
“In the first half we created chances, but not in the second.”
Another key talking point was the decision to leave out Casemiro, who didn’t start on an opening-day fixture for the first time under Zidane.
“In the first half we dominated, in the second we slowed things down,” he said.
“The Casemiro decision was just for this occasion.”
Up next for Real Madrid is the trip to Estadio Villamarin to play Real Betis on Saturday.
